The permanently snow-capped Mt Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain reaching a lofty 5895m. There is no technical climbing required to conquer this mighty peak, just a good level of fitness and some exceptional determination. The views and sense of achievement as you reach the summit are not to be missed on a career break to Tanzania.
Is this journey right for me?
This is an intensive trek for any career break traveller, with walking of 6 hours per day and a gruelling 12 hours on summit day. The rewards for your efforts are stupendous as you reach the summit of Africa’s highest peak making this a very special achievement on your gap year trip. You need to be physically fit, own good comfortable walking boots and enjoy the outdoors. Altitude sickness may be experienced and makes the trek more challenging. Maximum altitude is 5895m.

Where do I join and end the journey?
This career break journey starts and ends at a central meeting point in Arusha.
What’s Included?
Accommodation: You will camp in two man tents.
Travel: You walk with your own day sack – porters carry your main luggage and camp provisions.
Food: A cook travels with you and prepares three good meals a day for you. Energy snacks and safe drinking water are also provided. Bring your own water bottle.

The itinerary
Day 1 - Machame Camp
Meet in Arusha to start this exciting gap year adventure and drive to Machame village. Your trek on Africa’s highest mountain begins from the gate,
winding up to the lush tropical forests and out into heather moorland.
At midnight the trek begins up to the final steep, scree section to reach Stella Point. Walk steadily up the ridge and around the crater to reach Uhuru peak at 5895m. From the summit the trek descends.
Covering the last section of the mountain, you trek down through the forests to the gate where your vehicle will be waiting to transport you back to Arusha.
